Margaret River
Famous for its wine industry Margaret River is one of the most popular holiday retreats in WA. Only 3 hours drive from Perth city, it is home to some of the most spectacular karri forests, pristine coast lines, and natural landscapes. You can go caving, surfing, wine tasting, bushwalking, abseiling and and much more.
Wine Tasting
It is rare for a visitor to pass through margaret river without stumbling across one of its' many wineries. If you have your own transport, pop in to the tourist bureau for a free map showing how to get to any one of the 200 or so wineries in the region. If you want there are also a number of wine tours which you can join and this takes away the problem of who is going to be the designated driver if you end up sampling more than a couple wineries. Many vineyards that you will visit are cellar door wineries - this means that you can only sample or purchase wines from the outlet there and then.
Surfing
Margaret river is also home to some famous surfing spots. As a starting point have a look at Redgate Beach as there are a wide variety of breaks to check out here.
Camping and Bushwalking
Margaret river is central to one of the most biologically diverse parts of the world. If you are interested in bushwalking you may like to spend a few days camping along the cape to cape walk trail.
If you go walking in the summer you must be extra careful to watch the ground for snakes as Australia is home to many poisonous types. Covered footware is highly recommended for this reason.
Other Attractions
You may also want to enjoy a round of super golf, taste the treats at the local chocolate factory which offers free samples, or try some baked cheese from the cheese factory. There are also a variety of local woodcraft stores featuring local Australian timbers where you can pick up a nice Aussie gift for back home.
